Canberra's Burrangiri respite centre saved with $10 million federal funds
Works are expected to finish in 2028, and the government will work to ensure alternative respite care.
Burrangiri Aged Care Respite Centre in Rivett had been under threat of closure since 2024. The centre has been saved thanks to $10 million in federal funding for major upgrades.
During the 2025 election campaign, Federal Labor promised to spend $10 million on respite care beds in the ACT. Finance Minister Katy Gallagher has confirmed the funds would be used for essential infrastructure upgrades at Burrangiri.
The centre will temporarily close in the second half of 2027, with works expected to be completed in 2028. The ACT Government owns the centre, and the Salvation Army currently manages it.
Independent senator David Pocock and independent MLA Fiona Carrick said the upgrade was not good enough. The federal government had failed to deliver the extra respite beds it promised for Canberra, the pair said.
Why it mattersThe 15-bed centre stays open for now, but it will close for a time during the upgrades.
AustraliaPeople who use Burrangiri can expect alternative day and overnight respite care during the closure, the government says.
