New health figures nearly double the 44,000 cited to defend the changes

Health department analysis expects about 78,000 people aged 65 and over to drop cover by 2030.

The federal government's proposal would cut the rebate on private health cover for people aged 65 and over. Health department analysis expects 44,000 people to drop cover in 2028-29, reaching a total of 78,000 a year later.

The Coalition said Health Minister Mark Butler had consistently used the smaller 44,000 figure. About 2 million of the more than 3.2 million older Australians affected live on less than $37,000 a year.

The department says its estimates are uncertain because they rely on past data. The federal government says the savings, about $3 billion, will fund more aged care beds and packages.

The Greens said last week they would not back the bill in its current form. The Coalition has vowed to block the bill in the Senate.
