Canberra motorcycle deaths hit 44% of all road fatalities in two years
Motorcyclists make up just 5 per cent of ACT vehicles. But they account for about 44 per cent of recent road deaths.
October is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Riders in Canberra wore high-visibility vests in a campaign called 'Joe Rider'.
The riders tested whether drivers notice them on the road. Nearly one-third of people admitted to hospital after crashes in the past two years were motorcyclists.
A federal Road Trauma Australia report shows this is a national pattern. Motorcycle deaths have risen more sharply than any other road user group in the past four years.
Jen Woods is Motorcycle Riders Association ACT president and a 70-something rider. She says the campaign aims to change driver behaviour through visibility.
The ACT Government is working on its Road Safety Framework 2026-2031. It has committed to Vision Zero.
