Illawarra man jailed for 12 years over abuse of his niece
Sentenced to 12 years, he becomes eligible for release from custody on April 4, 2034.
A judge at Wollongong District Court sentenced the man to 12 years in jail for abusing his niece when she was five. A jury found him guilty in April of sexual offences against a child under 10.
The offences happened between 2013 and 2016. The abuse was uncovered in October 2023, when the victim sent her mother a text saying she needed to tell her something.
The court heard he still denies the offending and believes he may have been misidentified. The judge said he showed no remorse and that his drug use did not cause the offending.
The judge classed him as a high-risk offender, so strict conditions could apply to any future parole. He will serve his time in protective custody.
