Irish billionaire JP McManus and his group placed $1 million on Hopewell Rock to win almost $10 million at Tuesday's Melbourne Cup.
Irish bettors led by billionaire JP McManus splashed $1 million on Hopewell Rock at the Call of the Card luncheon on Monday. The bet shortened the horse from $10 to $8.50, making it the third favourite.
McManus and his group also wagered $150,000 on James J Braddock and placed five separate bets totalling $2 million across other horses including Cup favourite Point Of Law. The betting syndicate said they studied Hopewell Rock's form closely and believed the odds were generous.
The horse is trained by English trainer George Boughey and will race from barrier 15 in Tuesday's $10.2 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
