NT's CLP government relies heavily on blaming Labor rather than owning its own
NT's CLP blamed Labor 137 times in October parliament while crime, health and economy problems persist.
Country Liberal Party members mentioned the former Labor government 137 times during six sitting days of NT parliament in October, drawing criticism from Opposition Leader Selena Uibo. The CLP won the 2024 election after Labor's eight-year run left the Territory with crime spikes, weak economy and integrity scandals.
The CLP is now more than halfway through its first term. So far it has struggled with ongoing violence in remote communities and unmet election promises on local council control.
On child protection, Ms Cahill said the department could have intervened but did not, though eight notifications about Kumanjayi Little Baby were made while she was in office. While Labor may bear responsibility for some problems, some observers say the CLP blames its predecessor too often rather than fixing issues.
Independent Alice Springs MP Robyn Lambley said the deflection is becoming counterproductive.
