Dapto couple celebrates diamond anniversary after teenage dance
Sandra and Bryan Fleming's diamond anniversary marks six decades of marriage, begun at a teenage dance and surviving Vietnam.
Bryan, then 15, met Sandra at a school dance in Cooma in 1961 and fell in love immediately. The pair stayed connected through handwritten letters until Bryan was sent to Vietnam in 1966 as a soldier.
When Bryan was overseas, their letter writing continued but got more modern. Bryan bought tape recorders and they exchanged voice messages instead of letters.
Sandra's brother Paul Large was killed at the Battle of Long Tan, just 72 days after he arrived in Vietnam. Despite the tragedy, Bryan and Sandra married on October 1, 1966.
They moved to Dapto in the 1970s with their two young children. They have remained in the same house ever since.
They share a kiss every evening and hold hands while watching TV.
