Labor's first home buyer scheme helps 102,000 Australians in one year
The 5% deposit scheme helped 102,000 first home buyers since its October 2025 expansion, removing income caps and limits.
Labor released data showing its expanded 5% deposit scheme has helped more than 102,000 first home buyers get into homes over the past year. Half of all first home buyers nationally are now using a first home buyer scheme.
In ACT, 3,106 people accessed the scheme in the past year, bringing the total since 2022 to 7,207. Since Labor introduced the scheme four years ago, more than 280,000 Australians have used it.
The government removed income caps and increased property price limits when it expanded the scheme, and estimates the scheme has saved Australians more than $2.5 billion in mortgage insurance, with $1.4 billion saved in just the past year alone.
The government highlighted the figures amid ongoing criticism over inflation reaching 4% in August and the Reserve Bank raising interest rates to a 15-year high of 4.6%.
