China and North Korea plan opening of long-delayed 3km bridge
China and North Korea plan to open a four-lane bridge across the Yalu River on Thursday.
China and North Korea will hold an opening ceremony Thursday for a four-lane bridge across the Yalu River. The bridge spans about 3 kilometres and links Dandong in northeastern China with Sinuiju in North Korea, replacing an old single-lane bridge known as the Friendship Bridge.
The project was originally meant to open in 2014. But North Korea did not finish buildings for customs and border controls.
Why it was delayed remains unclear. Possible reasons include disputes between the governments and North Korea's border closure during COVID-19.
The new bridge may signal better relations between the nations and could help increase trade. However, UN sanctions on North Korea limit large-scale investment.
