Claremont votes to explore Perth council merger
Town of Claremont unanimously approved exploring a merger with neighbours including Cottesloe and Peppermint Grove.
Claremont voted unanimously to explore merging with nearby councils to cut costs and improve services. Mayor Peter Telford will discuss the idea with Cottesloe, Peppermint Grove, and Nedlands.
Mayor Telford told ABC Perth the time for a merger had probably arrived. Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley backed the move and will meet Telford next week.
Western suburbs councils are much smaller than other Perth areas. Peppermint Grove has around 1,600 residents in an area of 1.06 square kilometres.
The City of Stirling has more than 254,000. The government has introduced reforms to support council mergers.

Why it mattersMergers could lower costs per resident and improve services in small, separate councils.
AustraliaIf successful, Perth's western suburbs would see services delivered by fewer councils, potentially lowering rates and improving efficiency.
