Populous appointed to design Canberra stadium near Commonwealth Park

Global architecture firm Populous will design a 25,000/36,000-seat all-weather stadium with retractable roof for Canberra.

Populous will design a roofed, all-events stadium on Catholic church land at Regatta Place, next to Commonwealth Park. The facility would seat 25,000 to 36,000 people and have a retractable roof and field.

Architects promise the design will fit with the aquatic centre and Floriade nearby. Some Floriade beds on the site's eastern edge may be affected.

But the team believes the stadium would enhance the area overall. Populous based the $530 million cost estimate on similar projects like Christchurch's stadium.

Design and feasibility studies, with firm costs, will be ready in four to six months.
