Global stadium firm tests Canberra city venue concept
Populous designed Te Kaha Stadium in Christchurch. Now it will do concept design and feasibility work for Canberra's proposed all-events covered stadium.
Canberra Airport is leading a group that hired Populous to test the stadium idea. Populous designed Te Kaha in Christchurch, which cost $530 million and changed the city.
The study will look at design, site fit, how it runs, and building costs. The group is talking with the Catholic Archdiocese about buying the Archbishop's House site next to Commonwealth Park.
Federal and ACT Government money will be needed to build. Canberra Airport's managing director said the process is based on evidence and tested carefully.
Christchurch's Te Kaha has been a game-changer. Canberra will use it as a guide but tailor design to local weather and community needs.
