Dapto motorway gridlock adds 30 minutes to commuters' daily drive

The M1 Princes Motorway at Dapto is the worst bottleneck on Illawarra to Sydney commutes.

Daily commuters from the Illawarra to western Sydney report Dapto as the worst bottleneck on the M1. Traffic gridlocks from Dapto through Figtree before clearing toward Sydney.

The return journey hits the same issue at Berkeley exit. Brake lights stretch all the way from North Wollongong.

The Masters Road on-ramp is a key pinch point where traffic merges into two lanes. The Northcliffe Drive exit in Berkeley creates another backup.

A local poll found congestion adds up to 30 minutes to travel time. NSW government announced a $270 million investment in transport links to Port Kembla.

It is also considering the Masters Road connection as part of improvements under its Illawarra Shoalhaven transport plan.

Why it mattersHeavy congestion between Illawarra and western Sydney slows commerce and daily commutes. Without road improvements, traffic will get worse as the region continues to grow.

AustraliaThe Illawarra is undergoing major residential development; without urgent motorway upgrades, congestion will constrain economic activity at Port Kembla and frustrate thousands of daily commuters.
