More than $4.6m opens for Canberra sports club upgrades
Canberra sporting clubs can apply for a share of more than $4.6 million for new facilities, lighting, and equipment.
Canberra's sporting clubs are invited to apply for grants from a new more than $4.6 million funding round. The funding aims to fix ageing and overcrowded facilities.
An ACT Legislative Assembly inquiry found clubs operating at full capacity. The clubs had poor drainage, uneven surfaces, and too few indoor spaces.
Badminton ACT told the inquiry its clubs were full and unable to accept new members. Sports grounds recorded more than 120,000 hours of use in 2024 to 2025.
Demand concentrated on evenings and weekends. The Sport and Recreation Investment Scheme supports everything from new playing surfaces and lighting to accessibility upgrades and planning for larger projects.
More than $13 million has been awarded since 2023. The government is also investigating whether five currently dryland ovals could be brought into use for formal sport.
