US sending three carriers to Middle East as Iran war escalates
The US could have three carrier strike groups in the Middle East by late October for the first time since 2003.
A group of ships carrying more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines is heading to the Middle East. It includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group.
Combined with two carriers already there, this could create an unusually large naval presence by late October. Trump said in a Time interview it is "possible" he will order increased bombing in Iran after the mid-term elections.
He rejected Iran's latest ceasefire proposal. The region has seen war for more than seven months.
