Canberra opens $5.2m housing relief for renters in crisis
The $5.2 million Housing Crisis Support Fund opens 30 September for low-income Canberrans facing rental hardship.
The ACT government is launching a replacement for the Rental Relief Fund. The program helps renters facing hardship keep their homes.
Care Inc will run it. Care Inc expects to support almost double the previous program's reach.
The old program helped almost 1500 people over three years. Grants cover up to four weeks of rent, capped at $2500.
The fund also offers $250 crisis payments for essentials: utilities, insurance and basic furnishings. It provides $250 support for newly-housed public housing tenants.
Applicants triaged by need gain access to other Care programs. These include no-interest loans, energy support, financial counselling and legal help.
