Court blocks bail change for accused Belconnen attacker
An ACT magistrate rejected a bail change. It would have let an 18-year-old accused of attacking children visit Mount Stromlo Observatory.
The young man has severe mental disabilities. His bail conditions are strict.
He can only leave his parents' home for medical visits or court. Two family members must go with him.
He cannot go within 5 metres of any children. His lawyer said the complete ban on activities for fun was hurting his mental health and sleep.
He had enjoyed visiting Mount Stromlo Observatory to watch the telescope lasers. His lawyer asked to let him visit the outside areas on days other than Friday.
The magistrate said she understood but could not allow it. She feared he might meet families and tourists who often visit the site for stargazing tours.
The prosecution opposed the change. They had deep and serious concerns about him being close to children.
The defence said it would suggest two other public places. They will make a new application next week.
