Woman survives botched US execution, discharged to prison care
Christa Pike survived a failed lethal injection execution on September 30. She returned to prison badly hurt.
Christa Pike was sentenced to death in 1995. Tennessee tried to execute her with two lethal injections.
Both injections failed. Pike is 50 years old.
Pike was taken from the execution chamber to a Nashville hospital. Pike was unconscious and very sick with severe arm injuries.
Pike was later released from the hospital and returned to Debra K Johnson Rehabilitation Center. Pike has been held there for more than 30 years.
Pike's lawyers said she woke up angry and confused. She will need a long time to recover.
A Tennessee judge ordered all evidence from the failed execution saved. Governor Bill Lee stopped all executions for the rest of the year.
Investigators are looking at this failure and a similar one in May when prison workers could not get intravenous lines started.
