Colonel Sanders statue's return breaks Hanshin Tigers' 38-year curse
In 2023, Hanshin Tigers won their first title in 38 years after restoring a Colonel Sanders statue from a canal.
In 1985, Hanshin Tigers fans celebrating a championship threw a plastic Colonel Sanders statue into a canal as a ritual to represent a missing star player. Legend said the curse would lift only when someone found and cleaned the statue.
Construction workers discovered it in the sludge in 2009. After it was cleaned and blessed by a priest, Hanshin won the championship in 2023.
KFC Japan then gave the statue a ritual farewell at a local shrine in 2024.
