The 30-year-old scored 319 votes at Crown Palladium on Wednesday night. Bontempelli placed third in the Brownlow Medal, behind Nick Daicos and Bailey Smith.
Bontempelli won his first best-and-fairest in 2016 during the premiership season. He claimed seven in 11 years.
West won his across the same span between 1995 and 2005. Ed Richards finished second on 248 votes.
James O'Donnell, a key defender, placed third, with Buku Khamis fourth. The club said Zak Butters will join the Bulldogs after nominating them in the trade period.
