ANU hits record low ranking as competition toughens globally
ANU dropped to 77th in world university rankings, its lowest position ever.
The Australian National University dropped to 77th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027. This is its lowest position in the rankings' history, down from 73rd.
More global competition among top universities caused the drop, the university's acting provost said. ANU's best position was 47th in 2017.
The university scored its strongest teaching result since 2021, but overall points fell by 0.1 due to global competition. Leadership and management failures at the university over recent years have contributed to the decline.
The higher education regulator imposed four conditions on ANU over leadership, culture, and conflicts of interest. A cost-saving program called Renew ANU was found to lack evidence by the Auditor-General.
Across Australia, UNSW Sydney improved to 75th, while the University of Melbourne remained Australia's best-ranked at 34th globally.
