Mandurah council approves new church despite 145 public objections
Mandurah approved a 1200-square-metre church for the Free Reformed Church of Comet Bay despite 145 public objections.
City of Mandurah voted to approve a new church building at Lakes Road in Greenfields. The proposal drew 150 public submissions, with 145 opposing it.
The Free Reformed Church of Comet Bay meets at Foundation Christian College with 240 members and wants a dedicated space with seating for 439. The original design needed to remove about 33 trees.
The church changed plans to move the building to a cleared area, reducing tree removal. The city imposed 27 conditions including preventing future subdivision.
Mayor Amber Kearns said the decision was based on planning merit. Most objections were about tree removal and environmental impact.
The city noted that if rejected, the land could be subdivided into four lots, causing far greater clearing.
