81-year-old faces sentence for crash that killed 4-year-old

Maureen Brew will be sentenced for culpable driving. Her car struck and killed four-year-old Osal in January.

The 81-year-old's blue Hyundai i30 drove toward the storefront outside Southlands Shopping Centre in Mawson on January 18. The vehicle mounted the curb and struck the boy as he stood with his parents.

Police believe Maureen Brew panicked and pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. The Bhutanese boy's parents, Prakash Pokhrel and Chura Adhikari, read a victim impact statement on Tuesday.

They described their son as gentle and loving. The parents asked the court for the lightest sentence possible.

They want Brew to spend her remaining years with family. Justice Belinda Baker has not yet decided on sentencing.
