Architects restore Mayfield cottage, moving original owner to tears
Two architects restored a 1945 Mayfield cottage, preserving its character and moving the original owner to tears.
Bonnie Marcus and Brendan Williamson bought a neglected 1945 cottage at 29 Irelands Avenue in Mayfield and fully restored it. Marcus and Williamson stripped the home to bare bones.
Marcus and Williamson replaced the roof and linings, curving every new timber board to match the original shape. Marcus and Williamson copied the stepped cornice, skirtings and picture rails.
They sourced terracotta roof tiles to match the originals. Inside, they added a modern extension with open-plan living and five-metre ceilings.
They kept the central hallway and original character. When the original owner visited near completion, he had tears in his eyes.
He told Marcus: 'I wish I could buy it back.' The property, now four bedrooms and three bathrooms, is about to hit the market.
