Albury's new CEO leaves Australia Day event decision to councillors
New Albury CEO Jason Gordon says Australia Day event policy is a council matter, not his to decide.
New Albury Council chief executive Jason Gordon drew a clear line between his role and council decisions. When asked about staging events on Australia Day, he emphasised his impartiality.
Frank Zaknich was the former CEO. In 2023, he removed community awards and citizenship ceremonies from January 26.
He did this without a council debate. He cited the city's reconciliation action plan.
The awards returned to Australia Day this year after a close councillor vote. Gordon has Indigenous heritage.
He said his personal view does not override council policy. "There is a real distinct line between council and staff," he said.
"That's a policy matter of council. I will do whatever council asks to the best of my ability."
Gordon values listening to all community groups. He prefers working together rather than directing from above.
He draws on his Aboriginal heritage approach to leadership. This approach focuses on relationship and consensus.
