Mandurah council approves Woolworths for Lakelands site
Mandurah council voted 9-1 to allow a new Woolworths supermarket and shops at Lakelands town centre.
The City of Mandurah backed planning changes on September 22 to let a Woolworths and smaller retailers open at Lot 2102 Lake Valley Drive. The development will include about 6,060 square metres of shopping space and a 306-bay carpark.
The site sits across the road from the existing Lakelands Shopping Centre. A retail assessment predicted the new Woolworths would generate about $44 million in sales by 2027-28.
The WA Planning Commission must still approve the changes. Meadow Springs Shopping Centre objected, saying the new store risked harming its trade.
IFM Investors, owner of Lakelands Shopping Centre, supported the need for a second supermarket but argued a vacant site it owned nearby would suit it better.
