Turkey and Pakistan to deploy troops defending Saudi Arabia in Yemen war
Turkey and Pakistan have activated a mutual defence pact and pledged to deploy troops to Saudi Arabia as the Yemen conflict escalates.
Yemen's civil war is spiralling as Houthi forces seize more territory and attack Saudi oil facilities. Iran backs the Houthis, while Saudi Arabia, the United States, Turkey and Pakistan support the Yemeni government.
Turkey and Pakistan have activated a newly signed mutual defence agreement and will deploy troops to protect Saudi Arabia if attacked. The Houthis control roughly one-third of Yemen, including the capital.
They have tightened control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital shipping route. The fighting has killed more than 800 people, injured 3,000 and displaced 158,000 in recent weeks.
The US is providing intelligence and support but declined direct military involvement.
