Canberra opens Australia's first coastal rowing arena
The $1 million Canberra Coastal Rowing Arena opened at Black Mountain Peninsula. It was built for coastal rowing and beach sprints.
Australia's first arena built for coastal rowing and beach sprints has officially opened. The arena opened just in time for Canberra's Golden Oar Regatta Festival.
The sport makes its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028. Catherine Khan won bronze at the World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals.
She said the facility changes how athletes train. Before, coastal rowers used pontoons to practice.
Now they can properly train entries and exits. Khan's team plans to use the arena three to four times each week.
This is before the 2027 World Championships and Olympic qualifiers. The venue also serves as public space for concerts, theatre, and markets.
