South Korea chip stocks crash 11% on AI slowdown fears
Samsung and SK Hynix fell more than 11% each as South Korea fears a Democrat sweep will slow artificial intelligence investment.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix plummeted more than 11% each in early Friday trading as fears deepened that a Democrat sweep of Congress could slow the artificial intelligence buildout. The Kospi benchmark fell as much as 8.8%, forcing the Korea exchange to halt trading for 20 minutes shortly after the open.
The sell-off followed a global rout Thursday that drove the Nasdaq 100 down 6.4% and wiped out a record USD 2.3 trillion in market value. Investors are concerned that policy changes could slow demand for semiconductor chips used in AI systems.
