Newcastle port launches direct shipping route to New Zealand
MOVe Logistics started a direct container shipping service between Auckland and Newcastle's multipurpose terminal. This offers a new trade route.
Newcastle's port now has a direct shipping service to New Zealand. Auckland-based MOVe Logistics began bringing containers and general cargo through the port's Mayfield terminal this week.
This gives local businesses an option instead of routing freight through Sydney. The new route can help reduce transport costs and avoid delays from port congestion.
It can also make supply chains simpler for firms trading across the Tasman. Port chief Craig Carmody said the service makes Newcastle stronger as an international gateway.
A $36 million expansion of the multipurpose terminal is underway. It will increase storage capacity and help hold project cargo like renewable energy components.
