Western Sydney airport noise sparks curfew demand from Blue Mountains
Blue Mountains residents demand 11pm-6am curfew after aircraft noise increased since Western Sydney airport opening.
Western Sydney International Airport opened on 25 October, but Blue Mountains residents are already complaining about aircraft noise. David Lysiak, who has lived in the area for 44 years, says he worries about losing sleep as flights increase.
A group of residents has started a petition calling for a night-time curfew between 11pm and 6am, matching rules at Kingston Smith Airport. An air traffic expert says there are no perfect options when determining some flight paths.
International airlines including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and Fiji Airways have already signed up with the airport. Airservices Australia says it will prioritise using one runway direction during the day to reduce noise over residential areas.
