Monaro Highway flyover opens to cut commute times south of Canberra
A 196-metre flyover opens on the Monaro Highway tomorrow, bypassing traffic lights and cutting delays for commuters heading south from Canberra.
The new southbound flyover at the Lanyon Drive Interchange opens on Wednesday, handling 30,000 vehicles a day. The flyover allows through-traffic to skip the traffic lights that have created a bottleneck on the vital transport corridor linking Canberra, Queanbeyan and southern NSW.
Drivers turning into Queanbeyan will still use the existing roads and traffic lights. The flyover features Indigenous artwork on Corten steel panels, created with Ngunnawal elders and reflecting stories of connection to the Monaro corridor.
Cyclists will temporarily stay on the existing roadway but are expected to use the flyover from early next year.
