RACT demands overhaul of Bass Highway as 15 deaths mount on one deadly stretch
The RACT demands a major Bass Highway upgrade after 15 deaths on one stretch.
A section of the Bass Highway between Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm and Gannons Hill Road has recorded 15 deaths and 31 serious injuries since 2001. The call for action came after a September 6 head-on crash killed three people near Elizabeth Town.
The crash prompted public pressure on Transport Minister Kerry Vincent. The RACT released a submission demanding median barriers, wider sealed shoulders and safer overtaking lanes.
The highway recorded 330 crashes between August 2015 and July 2020. Safety audits found sections where traffic is not separated, shoulders are narrow and speed limits are too high.
The RACT's chief said that Tasmania's road toll target of fewer than 200 deaths a year by 2026 has already been missed.
- September 6 head-on collision killed 3
- Crash that triggered action
- fewer than 200 deaths a year by 2026
- Missed safety target
Why it mattersThe Bass Highway remains highly dangerous; without major infrastructure upgrades and speed reductions, deaths will continue in Tasmania's busiest regional corridor.
AustraliaRACT Tasmania is pushing the state government to make the Bass Highway its next major project, affecting road safety for drivers between the state's two largest regional cities.
