Canberra Bowling Club celebrates 100 years in Forrest
The club was founded in December 1925 and remains a vital social outlet.
Canberra Bowling Club is marking its centenary as one of the city's longest-serving community institutions. The club started on Christmas Eve 1925 when a small group played lawn bowls beside Hotel Canberra, the capital's first such club.
The club moved to Forrest in 1931 and has survived changing times, financial pressures and the closure of many other community clubs. Members describe it as a crucial gathering place, particularly for retired Canberrans who value both the sport and the social connection.
The club switched to synthetic greens in 2015 to cut costs and became pokie-free in 2025, redirecting funds to outdoor spaces and live music events. An open day on Saturday 31 October will invite the community to celebrate.
