The NSW Department of Education cordoned off an area at Newcastle High School. Asbestos was found in the soil between buildings K and L. Fragments were found on Tuesday, September 8.
The material is bonded asbestos, stuck to other materials like cement or vinyl. It cannot be crumbled easily.
A specialist contractor will remove the material outside school hours on Saturday, September 12. An independent hygienist will inspect the site afterwards.
If it is safe, they will provide a clearance certificate to reopen the area. The Department said the area was listed in the school's asbestos management plan.
