Airbnb host accused of using AI-generated photo to claim hundreds in damages
A Hobart Airbnb host submitted an AI-generated photo of an overflowing toilet to demand $1,500 from a guest for nonexistent repairs.
The A Family, a Hobart Airbnb host, submitted a fake photo to claim hundreds of dollars in damage fees. Two days after French tourist Alban left a negative review, the host requested $1,755, including a $1,500 invoice for removing a supposed foreign object from a toilet.
Alban suspected the image was fabricated and used an AI detector. He said it confirmed the image had been made or edited with Google AI.
The ABC then verified this finding with Google's SynthID Detector. The invoiced companies listed in the claims do not exist: their ABNs were invalid, emails bounced, and no businesses matched the addresses given.
Airbnb investigated and rejected the damage claim entirely, refunding Alban almost $2,000 including refunds for missed tours. The host has 12 listings across Tasmania and Victoria with 278 reviews, but several former guests report similar questionable damage claims.

Why it mattersAirbnb guests need to detect and document false damage claims, especially as AI-generated images become harder to spot and more convincing.
AustraliaAustralian short-stay guests should keep detailed records of their stays and use AI detection tools to protect themselves from fraudulent damage claims on Airbnb.
