Coles paper bag cost rises from 25 cents to 30 cents

The rise is a 20 per cent jump, and larger chipper bags went from $4 to $4.20.

Coles has confirmed it raised the price of its paper shopping bags from 25 cents to 30 cents. The rise is 20 per cent on an item supermarkets used to offer for free.

Larger chipper bags also went up, from $4 to $4.20. Coles says it changed prices on selected bags and tried to keep the rises as low as possible.

Coles says prices can rise from time to time because of costs such as materials and transport. Woolworths and Aldi paper bags still cost 25 cents, and the Coles Online flat bag fee remains $2.

Coles and Woolworths phased out free single-use plastic bags in mid-2018, citing environmental concerns. Retail expert Professor Gary Mortimer, from Queensland University of Technology, estimated the major supermarkets make about $170 million a year from charging for paper and reusable bags.
