Nigeria confirms first Ebola case as outbreak spreads across Africa
Nigeria has confirmed its first case of the Bundibugyo Ebola strain, which has no vaccine or targeted treatment.
The infected woman arrived in Nigeria by plane from Uganda. The woman was treated at a private hospital near the capital, Abuja, before being isolated.
The Bundibugyo variant is the main strain in the current outbreak. The variant is hard to contain because there is no vaccine and no targeted treatment.
Kenya has recorded nine cases and one death so far. Nigeria is the fourth African country affected by this variant.
The outbreak started spreading in May from the Democratic Republic of Congo. There, 9,552 cases and 4,602 deaths are now recorded.
The Africa Centers for Disease Control said this is the most widespread Ebola outbreak in history. The death rate is nearly 50 percent.
