Chery plans Australian R&D base to tailor cars for local roads
Chery plans to build an Australian research centre to adapt its vehicle range to local driving conditions, roads and weather.
Chery International president Zhang Guibing said the company wants to establish an R&D centre in Australia to modify vehicles for local conditions, since Australian roads, weather and driving habits differ from China.
The centre would work on new products including utes like the Stockman diesel hybrid due here in February 2027. The company has not disclosed the location, opening date or investment amount.
Chery is already working with Australian engineering firm Premcar on testing and validating the Stockman's ride and handling. The group also plans to introduce several new brands to Australia during 2027, including premium lines Luxeed and iCaur.
These will join existing Chery and Omoda Jaecoo brands, with Jetour also preparing to launch in 2027.

Why it mattersLocal vehicle testing means cars sold in Australia get tuned for Australian roads rather than imported unchanged, potentially improving safety and reliability for local drivers.
AustraliaAustralian-tested vehicles from Chery and its growing brand range should perform better on local roads, and the R&D centre could create local engineering and testing jobs.
