Justene Williams' survey brings 'Victory over the Sun' to Brisbane
Justene Williams' new show 'Once We Were Mudskippers' opens at Queensland Art Gallery until March 7.
Justene Williams has spent over 20 years developing a unique visual style. She mixes historical avant-garde design, 1990s DIY style and modern suburban culture.
Her new show 'Once We Were Mudskippers' takes its title from fish. These fish walk on land and breathe air.
The mudskipper works as a symbol throughout the show. The exhibition features costumes from her 2016 version of 'Victory over the Sun'.
That was a 1913 opera by Kazimir Malevich. Williams collects and reuses materials from her earlier performances and displays.
She creates links across decades of her work. Pieces include sculpture, video and performance costumes.
They explore surveillance, technology and memory. She brings together very different ideas into a unified artistic vision.
