ACT police step up patrols after knife crime incidents in Tuggeranong

ACT Police are increasing patrols in Tuggeranong after alleged youth knife crimes, with the government preparing wanding legislation.

Police are increasing their presence across Tuggeranong following several alleged knife crimes involving young people. ACT Policing has deployed officers to community events.

Police have also held pop-up stations at local shopping centres. Police Minister Dr Marisa Paterson said she is deeply concerned about knife incidents.

Knives are easily accessible weapons. The government is preparing legislation to give police limited powers to use electronic 'wand' searches.

These searches would check people suspected of carrying knives. Recent incidents include stabbings at Lake Tuggeranong College and Lanyon High School.

There was also a stabbing in Canberra's north. Paterson said these incidents are concerning.

However, there has been no statistical increase in youth crime overall.

Why it mattersKnife violence creates immediate safety risks. It prompts governments to consider new enforcement tools like electronic searches, raising important questions about privacy versus security.

AustraliaCanberra residents, especially families and young people in Tuggeranong, face heightened police presence and new search powers; schools in the area are taking additional security measures.
