Australia to require AI firms to run strict safety checks
The Albanese government is requiring AI companies to run strong risk management systems instead of relying on voluntary oversight.
Andrew Charlton is the Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy. Charlton announced the government is pursuing system rules for AI companies.
Companies must build and run a careful process to find, test, report on, and manage the risks of their systems. Companies are held accountable for whether the process works, not just whether incidents happen.
This approach is already used in health and safety, critical infrastructure security, banking risk oversight and aviation safety. Charlton said voluntary regulation fails because companies will not regulate themselves when trillions of dollars are at stake.
He also said regulation alone is not enough. Australia must build and host AI technology so it has real influence in how it develops.
