Joshua Loy lands maiden winner in just two race rides
Joshua Loy, 20, won his first race on Vasala at Deniliquin, just two rides into his jockey career.
Apprentice jockey Joshua Loy broke through at Deniliquin last weekend, riding Vasala to victory in a $12,000 Class 3 Handicap over 1600 metres, just his second ride since earning his jockey's licence. Loy jumped from barrier one, took the lead straight away and held off rivals to cross the line first.
The 20-year-old had spent nearly three years working toward this moment, leaving school in Year 11 to pursue his dream. His father Norm, a former jockey and trainer, was among the first to congratulate him.
Trainer Darrell Burnet was so loud cheering him home that someone caught it on video, Loy later discovered. The victory marked the end of a long apprenticeship spent riding trackwork and working with different trainers.
