Canberra BMX championship cancelled with four days' notice

The state BMX championship was cancelled with just four days' notice.

The planned state championship in January was cancelled on short notice. Families had booked flights and accommodation.

AusCycling cited risk concerns; the organiser said funding was unconfirmed. Robin Brown runs free Friday BMX sessions drawing up to 50 young riders, including Sheldon Robey, who placed in the national elite final.

Despite four Australian Olympic medallists in the sport since 2012, the sport struggles for funding.

Why it mattersYoung athletes lose out when sports bodies pull events on short notice, damaging trust and making it hard for grassroots programs to survive.

AustraliaCanberra's growing BMX community has no clear path to compete at state level, while the ACT government funds AusCycling $85,000 yearly.
