Burning paper meant to scare a spider destroys a $160,000 Bali villa
Strong winds apparently carried burning paper onto a thatched roof that can be highly flammable.
Gaorap Rana, a 45-year-old tourist from Nepal, lit paper to scare a spider in his Kuta villa bathroom. Badung police say Gaorap Rana left the bathroom after burning the paper.
Strong winds apparently carried the paper onto the thatched roof, made from alang-alang grass. Alang-alang grass can be highly flammable.
The fire spread through the villa within minutes. Firefighters were called on October 5 and, with help from locals, brought the fire under control.
The blaze reduced the luxury villa and its contents to ruins. Mr Rana escaped unharmed, and no injuries were reported.
