Salford's 1843 campaign won mill workers Saturday afternoons off

Robert Lowes successfully campaigned for Saturday afternoons off at a Salford mill.

Back in 1843, Salford activist Robert Lowes won Saturday afternoons off for workers at a mill. The travel article says a Salfordian invented the weekend, and the idea spread across the UK.

Lowes was the great-great-grandfather of actor Sir Ian McKellen. Salford is often overshadowed by its neighbour Manchester, just across the River Irwell.

The two cities essentially share one city centre, so many visitors stay in Salford without knowing it. Salford Lads' Club also appeared on the cover of The Smiths' 1986 album The Queen Is Dead.

Why it mattersIf you visit Manchester, Salford sits next door, and many visitors stay there without realising it.

AustraliaTravel tip for Australians: Emirates flies from Sydney and Melbourne to Manchester via Dubai, and Salford sits just across the river.
