Queensland man denied bail over alleged $97,000 bribe in wife murder case

Awlad Hossain transferred $97,000 to Bangladeshi associates to try to remove himself from a murder investigation.

A Queensland magistrate denied bail to Awlad Hossain, 51. He is charged with bribing foreign officials investigating his estranged wife's suspected murder in Bangladesh.

Hossain allegedly transferred $97,000 to Bangladeshi associates between 2024 and 2026. He aimed to remove his name from a police inquiry into Rehana Parvin's death.

Parvin was an Australian citizen and mother of five. Her body was found buried in the yard of Hossain's sister's home in Bangladesh in 2024.

Commonwealth prosecutors argued Hossain posed a risk. He might flee, interfere with witnesses, or commit further crimes.

Prosecutors said he had asked about leaving Australia without a passport. He was willing to give anything to convince Bangladeshi officials to drop the case.

Hossain's lawyer challenged how strong the evidence was. He noted some money transfers were made by a third party.

The magistrate found no conditions could reduce the risks enough. Bail was refused.

The matter returns to court early next year.
