Newcastle Private bans IVF and abortion with just three weeks' notice
Calvary will ban IVF, abortion, voluntary assisted dying and gender reassignment at Newcastle Private starting November 30, doctors with minimal transition time.
Calvary Health Care confirmed Wednesday night that reproductive services would end in three weeks. IVF, abortion, voluntary assisted dying and gender reassignment procedures will no longer be offered at the hospital's New Lambton Heights site.
Sterilisation and contraceptive procedures aimed solely at preventing pregnancy are also banned. More than 1000 IVF patients use the hospital yearly, and about 1600 babies are delivered there annually.
Doctors say the timeline is impossible: they need time to arrange new credentialling, contracts and setup elsewhere. One obstetrician noted that "giving people only three weeks to relocate services is not enough time."
Ramsay Health Care and others are exploring how to absorb the relocated services, but disruption is expected.
