Takeaway destroyed in fire days into new ownership

Wilson Street Store in Wodonga burned early Sunday, just 10 days after new owners Richard and Helena Shannon took over.

Firefighters arrived at the weatherboard shop early Sunday to find it well ablaze. CCTV footage showed a flash from a window, suggesting an explosion may have occurred.

Police sealed off the extensively damaged interior. The new owners Richard and Helena Shannon had taken possession just 10 days earlier.

The shop is known for fish and chips and serves the nearby hospital. Steve McLennan, who owned it for about 18 years before selling, called the fire devastating, especially for the new family of six trying to give something a fair go.
