Man charged after allegedly choking 15-year-old stepdaughter in Canberra

A 41-year-old was arrested after allegedly choking and kicking his stepdaughter, then throwing broken glass at her.

A 41-year-old Canberra man returned home on Sunday and argued with his 15-year-old stepdaughter. The 41-year-old allegedly punched a window, then kicked and choked the girl when she confronted him.

The girl escaped and called police. The man then allegedly grabbed broken glass and threw it at her.

When her mother tried to intervene, he kicked her too. Police arrived after a neighbour called them.

On Monday, he faced the ACT Magistrates Court charged with two counts of assault, plus choking and property damage. His lawyer requested bail with conditions, but prosecutors opposed release, citing safety concerns from the girl and her mother.

The magistrate adjourned the hearing until Wednesday to obtain evidence of the man's entry into a detox program.
